Origins Issue #2

The second issue of the pre-series comic Origins is out for a couple of days now, and I am underwhelmed to say the least. Here are some short thoughts on the new comic, but be prepared for mostly negative ramblings.
Okay, I have to say I am severely dissatisfied with the comics at the moment. I really hate the artwork more than ever. Especially the drawings for Sam and Dean are extremely edgy and lack any depth, which not only results in the fact that the characters are very ugly, but it also makes them look much older than their actual age. It's even worse though that the content of this issue strays more and more from the canon as we know it:
- The first and possibly most annoying inconsistency between canon and the comics is the fact that according to the comic, John leaves Lawrence in a station wagon. It's established in the Pilot though that John already owned the Impala when Mary died, as we see John and the boys sitting on the hood of the Impala after the fire. So, it also makes no sense at all that the writers state in Origins that John gets the car from Mary’s brother after Mary died.
- Missouri states in the first issue of the comic that the artefact John has found in Julie's apartment after the attack on Sam and Dean, belongs to the thing that killed Mary. In the second issue it is revealed that said artefact is a hellhound tooth. However, in the replay of the events in Sam's nursery in All Hell Breaks Loose I, there is nobody present in the room but the YED, Mary and baby Sam. No hellhounds far and wide, so the tooth can't possibly belong to the YED. Heck, the YED even states that Mary's death was only an accident, so why would the YED send a hellhound after Sam and Dean only a couple of days later? I mean, we know for a fact that the YED wants Sam alive and that he kept Dean around because he thought he might me useful some day. So the whole attack scenario in the comic doesn't make any sense to me.
- The journal that John receives from Fletcher Garble looks nothing like the onscreen version of the journal.
- From the Phantom Traveller we know that according to the official investigation into the fire that caused Mary’s death, the whole incident was attributed to faulty wiring. So, why would Mary’s brother accuse John to be responsible for Mary's death? Officially it was an accident. Also, we know from Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things that Mary’s gravestone was set up by her uncle, a person Sam and Dean never met. Why would a distant relative put up the gravestone if her brother, who was obviously like a surrogate father to Mary - nice parallel to Sam and Dean by the way - was there to take care of things? Again, that doesn’t make much sense.
- After Jacob has been attacked by the hellhound, he is obviously still alive. Now, why on earth does the mysterious stranger insist on killing him, instead of bringing him to a hospital? The wounds could easily be attributed to an animal attack. It seems unnecessary to kill Jacob off without a second thought, and quite frankly, I don’t find it very believable that John would murder his own brother-in-law in cold blood, trusting the word of a complete stranger in such a serious matter. Okay, I get that Jacob was probably bound to die anyway, given the severity of his wounds, but I simply don't believe that John would go through with an insane plan like dropping Jacob off a cliff in his car.
So, all in all I am not really sure where the writers will take this comic series, and since they now even started to drift away from the few canon facts we know about that period of time, I am not sure I want to know. I am very disappointed at the moment.

Date: 2007-06-15 06:30 pm (UTC)Yeah, the comic really isn't sticking to anything approaching the canon established on the show, and that's really disappointing.

Date: 2007-06-15 07:17 pm (UTC)There are now multiple canons for SPN:
Nevermore (which sucks, apparently. I've read a teaser, and personally, not pleased yet)
Origins which I do agree--- *shudders*
And finally, the true canon: SPN.
I love SPN. It's probably the only canon I'll stick with.
Right. Back to studying.
