Make A Request: Part II

With the holidays over, I now have time to slowly, but surely, work on my Christmas request list, the imperative word being 'slowly'. *g* At least I developed ideas for most of the requests y’all threw at me, so I guess that’s a good sign, although of course that’s no guarantee that it’ll work out. I hope you all don’t mind that I won’t work on the requests in chronological order, I just pick the prompt that my muse points at, I have no real say in the matter.
Anyway, the wallpaper today is for
chiiyo86. I hope you like it, hon! :)
Day & Night: Dear
chiiyo86! I found your request particularly challenging, although the moment you posted your prompt - use the wide-angle overhead shots of Dean in Lazarus Rising and Sam in I Know What You Did Last Summer in one wallpaper - I already had an idea for it that sprung from the caps itself. With Dean being shown in bright daylight and Sam in the dark of the night, the visual juxtaposition of day & night, dark & light, birth & death, black & white kind of was the logical step for this wallpaper. Still, I fiddled forever with this, the caps weren't easy to work with and it took me a while to work out the composition. I hope I fulfilled your request to your satisfaction though.
The story I wanted to tell here is simple: On the left we see Dean, post-resurrection, alone and confused, on the right Sam is at the crossroad, grim and determined to bring his brother back. The grief over Dean's death set the darkness within Sam free and he is willing to sacrifice everything to be reunited with his brother. The text emphasises that notion by suggesting that Sam left behind light, goodness, optimism - in short, everything that is associated with 'light of day' - in the time he was without Dean. The angle/lighting in the cap of Sam at the crossroad results in Sam throwing a really huge, elongated shadow and by allowing that shadow to cross over into Dean's side of the wallpaper, I used that to show that Sam's inner darkness 'overshadows' the joyful fact of Dean's return. I also like the symbolism of Sam and Dean's shadows falling side by side, while the characters themselves face away from each other.

Date: 2010-01-08 04:40 pm (UTC)LOL, I usually don't read a description until after looking at the wall, so now I'm giggling that I used the word juxtaposed and you used in your description! I didn't mean to steal it from you! LOL! But I really love how Sam's shadow stretches over the boundary. As well as how neither brother's side is distinctly black or white but instead varying darks & grays.

It's funny you say that, because I had stronger contrasts in the beginning, with Dean's side completely white and no direct light source on Sam's side, but I didn't like it. It was too ... clinical? Adding the soft grey on the left and the beautifully lit night cap of the Impala on the right side made all the difference. It works better, in content as well as visually.

I love the use of black and white. The difference of colors between the two shots was an issue, but it wonderfully solves the problem (and, you know, it's pretty!). I also love the images overlapping on each other, it gives a dream like quality to all of it.
Also, the boys looks good, which doesn't hurt. :D

Date: 2010-01-09 06:18 pm (UTC)RL is insane, yep. I have exams, new boyfriend, friends, when I'm at home for weekends i'm usually busy with family.. Aww, it's so hard to find some time.
I feel like doing art, but it doesn't mean I have any idea LOL

Date: 2010-01-09 08:06 pm (UTC)Sounds like your life is busy, but also awesome! I mean, new boyfriend & friends & family, you should enjoy that to the fullest. The internet will still be there when you have a little more time and we're all used to people vanishing for a while and coming back, that's how the internet works. :) I am just happy that your life seems good. *hugs*

Date: 2010-01-09 08:19 pm (UTC)My life is better, but not so much! It's kind of stressful right now. I also miss my old life at times. Anyway I know RL is more important than VL, so I have to figure it all out&find time for both parts ;)
thanks for everything Chris *hug*

Date: 2010-01-09 09:43 pm (UTC)Yeah, combining both lives is the tricky part. VL is less demanding than RL though, it's easier to put on hold - can't do that with exams or a boyfriend. *g* I hope once the exams are finished, you find the time to relax a bit, take a breather. You earned it.
I didn't do anything, but you're welcome. ;)
