Intermission: Some Art

Over the last couple of weeks I have been in a real fanart funk. It’s not even that I have no ideas, in fact I have about half a dozen unfinished S4 related pieces in my WIP folder, it’s just that I have no real enthusiasm for PS at the moment. Sometimes fanart seems such an inadequate means to capture what I want to say, that I wished I settled on vidding back in the days. *g* Well, enough with the self-pity, on with the art.



Reunion: Despite the fact that this is probably one of the simplest episodic pieces I’ve done in a while, this one was a real nightmare and I only didn’t give up on it because I really, really wanted that scene on my desktop. I wanted to art a hug between the brothers for a long while but AHBL and Mystery Spot were unsuitable, because they only show extreme close-ups. Still, even with the Lazarus Rising caps I had troubles to come up with a decent composition. In the end I based it on a layout of one of bre2004’s beautiful pieces and she kindly allowed me to reuse her idea. Thanks again, hon! *hugs*

As for the art itself, I kept it really simple because nothing is more expressive than Jensen and Jared’s expressions and I wanted the distraction from it to be minimal. In accordance with the lyrics the caps surrounding the hug are only half-blended, broken up in pieces by various means (lights, boxes, lines) to symbolize that alone, Sam and Dean are fractured. The images come together in the hug in the middle, both boys are whole again when reunited. I went for warm (orange) and hopeful (green) colours. Beware, I used utterly schmoopy lyrics here. I was in a very sappy mood when I made this and so Sam and Dean had to suffer. LOL

Smile: I made this Jensen piece for ehlwyen’s birthday last week, because everybody should have sunshine, smiles and the beauty that is Jensen Ackles as a birthday present! ;)

Well done for the reunion piece - sometimes, they just will not provide the angles you need for art! I love how you've got around the problems inherent with the framing of the scene and managed to capture the full emotion of it. Excellent job. ♥

And as for the Jense piece, well that's just all sunshine and beauty, like you say :)

Thank you! *hugs* Yeah, that's the problem. Supernatural is fairly blessed with great angles and beautiful shots, but a lot of the emotional scenes are just a series of close-ups and it's difficult to work with that in a creatively interesting manner. I am glad you feel I captured the emotion of the scene despite the limits of the caps! :)

Heh, thanks! Happy you liked them! Yeah, the good thing with shoots is, you can just do with them whatever you want, no restrictions. If you want to cover Jensen Ackles in sunflowers, you can simply do it. *g* It's so much harder to work a decent episodic piece! LOL

You're welcome! I started cuz I could never find good wallpaper resources a few years ago for the shows I liked and was forced to make my own and there was a need. Now it's just an addiction and the feedback pushes me further I guess but I get into those funks until a photo or scene inspires me. Of course now I find really amazing fanart like yours and others that I collect for my personal use along with my own creations to enjoy.

Heh, I started because I really needed a creative outlet for my overwhelming love for my shows. I wavered between fanart and vidding and in the end decided for the first because the resources were easier to come by and then I became addicted. I love arting, even if I have these frustrating phases in between. *g*

Ahh...Well most of my earliest graphics was more manips and political satire but once I got the fanart bug there was no stopping me. It is a great outlet. I tried making just a comedy picture vid for fun and it was such a pain that I never got into vidding after that but one of my fiends does vids for Smallville. I've collaborated on vids with her as more of an ideas person for them rather than an editor. I saw what she went through and knew it wasn't for me. Used way too much memory and resources on my crappy puter and I didn't have the patience to rip and find tiny clips. Graphics is the only thing I can work painstakingly long hours on....lol...but lately my muse is not cooperating. *Sighs*

Heh, I hear ya! I made one vid, back in my AtS time and the painful process of ripping and cutting clips was enough to get me off of vidding again. I adore fanmade vids though and sometimes I think they are better for capturing emotions than art. Movement is somethin that's difficult to recreate in a static, 2 dimensional medium.
