I thought his insistence to Amelia that neither of them was to be pitied was interesting. It reminded me of his "other people have it worse" denial of just how bad things were in s7.
Oh, that is a good catch! I like the thought that Sam was still in a state of denial about how much he was actually suffering from Dean's disappearance, as a coping mechanism that allowed him to move on - only not really.

I am irritated by the fact that the degree to which Sam and Dean aren't communicating feels a bit artificial to me.
I agree with this so much. Carver & Co said that we would see more mature characters this season, but I feel that in this particular point they have regressed for no particular reason. These are not the same boys from 8 years ago who were afraid of having an unmanly 'chick flick moment', these are grown men, who went through hell and back and confessed some of the most unimaginable horrors to each other - and suddenly they are unable to share the most basic information about their time apart? I just don't buy it. The structuring of the season feels detrimental to the emotional flow, and that is one of my biggest problems with the season so far.

I'm with you on Sam/Amelia being quite intriguing.
Oh, that is great to hear. I see so much hate towards Amelia in fandom, it saddens me. Sure, she is not always written very well, and maybe Liane Balaban's acting is sometimes a little stiff, but I actually love how the story between her and Sam plays out. I love that they didn't just repeat Lisa/Dean with Sam/Amelia - i.e. burdened hunter crashes into the perfect, normal life of a well-adjusted civilian - but actually gave their story a distinctly different and unique spin. I really like that Amelia is so abrasive and recalcitrant and that it feels like they both have to rediscover a normal life together. They're both each other's crutches. It's definitely a relationship we haven't seen in the show before.
