SN fanvideo recommendations - Part I

galatheaAs some of you may know, I am a huge fan of fanmade musicvids and I collect and store them for quite a while now. So, when I came into the Supernatural fandom, seeking out fanvids was one of my first steps. I often forgot to leave feedback or comments on vids that I loved and so I gathered up some of my favourite videos, that I saw over the course of the last 1.5 years and put together a recommendation post.
Since I have around 120 SN videos at the moment that I intend to keep and I want to give some proper feedback, I will have to split this up into several parts, even if I only pick out my Top20 or 30 vids. So here are the first 10 vids, in no particular order, something new, something old, some fun, some action, some character, some angst. A lot of these were recced all over the SN fandom, but I hope everybody might find something new to watch here.
Oh, and since I don't do Wincest, these are all gen and intended as such from the various vidders. I checked all links and every video should be available for download (I have a huge distaste for YouTube, sorry) :) Enjoy!

“I just want to make you proud, I’m never gonna be good enough for you” (Simple Plan)
Sam POV; This is probably one of the best videos about the relationship between John and Sam I have come across so far. Sam’s feelings of inadequacy when it comes to John and his inability to talk to him, their differences and parallels are highlighted very well and yet the love he has for his father still shines through loud and clear. The editing is beautiful and the clips and lyrics match perfectly. There are some lovely layers in this vid and the few effects are utilized very well.

“I like it here, but it scares me to death, there is nothing here” (Sarah Bettens)
Dean POV; This is an episodic video for WIaWSNB and what I love most about this vid is how the vidder managed to find so many scenes from S1 that visually mirrored WIaSNB and overlaid them. It creates a lot of narrative depth and emotional impact, especially in combination with the lyrics of the song. I love how the vidder uses color (fantasy) and b/w (real world) and then switches it around in the middle of the vid after Dean stabbed himself. Soft transitions and a slow pace enhance the dream-like atmosphere of the video. It had me in tears all the way through. ♥

“If you want to, I can save you, I can take you away from here!" (Michelle Branch)
Sam POV; Another video that really touches me immensely. Usually we only see the ‘Dean will save Sam’ side of the story, but this video focuses on Sam being the best little brother in the universe. ♥ It’s about his big brother worship, his attempts to be there when Dean falls apart, trying to see behind Dean’s tough façade. The video has a wonderful flow and is well edited. If you look for videos about the brotherly love and devotion, wolfpup’s vids are a never ending source of joy. Seriously, check all of her vids out! :)

“I think that I might break, lost myself again and I feel unsafe” (Sia)
Sam POV; This was probably my favourite video about the whole ‘I will turn evil and Dean needs to kill me’ drama of S2. It has me in tears Every. Single. Time. Sam falls into a deep depression after learning of his destiny and desperately depends on Dean to watch over him and save him, just like he always did. The song starts out nearly intimate and gradually turns very dramatic and symphonic and the video matches that development beautifully. The vidder also uses some very well placed voiceovers.

The Good Fight bydragonfly_sg1
“It’s not what they fight, it’s what they fight for.” (Armageddon Theme)
This is an epic trailer for Supernatural in general and it’s awesome. If I saw this on tv I would watch the show in a heartbeat! Well, if I wasn’t already watching it like a crazy, obsessed person anyways. *g* The video concentrates on the epic storyline of Winchesters vs Evil, the fights, the sacrifices and that in the end it comes down to a family, standing together. I love how the vidder uses lots of wide-angle shots and scenery clips to set up an atmosphere for the video, before changing over to character clips. The editing in sync to the beats of the music is very well done and the voiceovers add immensely to the overall epic feel of the trailer. ♥

Hey Pretty byastartexx
“I'm out here driving again, through the wicked winding streets of my world.” (Poe)
Impala POV; Are you one of those fans who think the Impala is absolutely the third character on the show and has a consciousness of her own? Then this is your video! Astarte is one of my favourite vidders, not only do her vidding skills reach a professional level but also the amount of thoughts that flow into each of her videos is amazing. She calls this vid basically ‘car porn’ and well, it is. *g*

To Be A Ghost byastartexx
“Bypassed everything and went straight for the neck.” (Take Back Sunday)
This is a character study of Dean in S1 and it is probably the most complex video I have ever seen and really, you don’t want to watch this if you are tired or drunk or high, or well, maybe you want just then. My knowledge about vidding is far too limited to even start to describe the use of masks and split-screens she employs or how she uses b/w and colour to set the rapidly moving clips apart. But this isn’t just a show-off of mad vidding skills, the narrative is flawless as well, she manages to comprise every possible character facet of Dean, stays in tune with the lyrics and the changes of pace in the music. Awesome!

“While I'm asleep, my spirit crawls out.” (Patrick Wolf)
This video is centred around Sam and his visions and nightmares. The song used in this video is exceptional, it’s creepy and atmospheric and orchestrated out of the ordinary and sets a very specific atmosphere for the video. The editing for this vid is very well done, as it manages to translate the sounds/music of the song into visuals. While it features a lot of clips from the episode ‘Nightmare’ the vidder made sure to also integrate more general Sam character insights into the vid. Altogether this is one of my favourite Sam videos from S1.

Ode To A Bitchface bymonkiedude
“On a day like today when you're all argumentative and you've got THE FACE on.” (Arctic Monkeys)
Dean POV; For a change I have something on the more funny side of SN, the infamous ‘Ode to Sammy’s bitchfaces’. Usually I don’t keep videos that feature clips with credits in them, it’s one of the neglects in vids that really annoy me, because it’s easy to cut out the few frames. This video is one of the few exceptions from that personal rule. It’s hilarious, the vidder probably captured every single instance in S1 where Sam rolls his eyes at Dean, scoffs, looks pissy or broody or annoyed. It’s totally adorable and if you are not grinning throughout the whole thing you have to be really in a bad, bad mood or completely humourless! *g*

“It’s more than the shot that gets you through.” (Matthew Good)
This video pretty much comprises all of S1 but focuses on the seaon finale in its second half. It’s mainly about the Winchesters as hunters on the road and where it leads them in the end. The song is very captivating, starts out quiet and understated but works itself up into a huge crescendo. The vid is extremely well edited and utilizes some effects like flashes very effectively. I especially love the opening sequence in this video, because it’s very muted plus it serves as a frame connection to the finale centered part of the vid. Very well done!
