Man, you're a turbo reader! *hugs* Thanks! I found it easier to write about the episode, once I had my frustration out of the system. The episode really does make a lot of good points, it's sad that it is compromised so much by the poor characterisation.
since as far back as S2 we have seen Dean trying to come to terms with Sam's powers as potentially benign rather than inevitably evil That is true, but that was when Sam's powers were still passive and he was an unwilling recipient of the visions. Sam was just as worried about his powers in S2 as Dean. In S4 though Sam deliberately uses his powers, with intent, with the same determination he once rejected them and that's a whole different story. :)
