Make A Request: Part VI

Folks, I am so sorry the fulfilment of the art requests is going so slow, but I had a serious art block these last couple of weeks. I feel incredibly guilty that you all have to wait so long for your wallpapers. But hey, at least the unfinished requests force me to open Photoshop and try to get something done, instead of just wallowing in self-pity. Anyway, two days back I finally had a good, and most importantly a viable, idea for [livejournal.com profile] naisica’s request, so here it is. Enjoy!

Mea Culpa: Dear [livejournal.com profile] naisica, you asked for a Sam wallpaper focussing on his demons and his guilt, but also his hope for redemption, and I was very happy about this request. Actually I was inclined to make a wallpaper about that theme anyway, but your request forced me to come up with a concept sooner rather than later and prevented that I put it off or weasel my way out of it. I can be lazy that way. ;) In my mind this wallpaper is set in early S5, depicting the desperate, guilt-ridden Sam we see in Sympathy For The Devil.

As for the art: We see a despairing Sam cower in a prison cell of his own making, it’s a prison made of shame, guilt and self-loathing. Sam turns his back to the light (forgiveness) coming in through the window, unable to accept a higher forgiveness for his sins. The door to his prison is open, Sam could walk out any time and leave the guilt behind, but he doesn’t, as he isn’t able to forgive himself either. He is situated in front of a mirror, but instead of his remorseful self all he can see is his dark alter ego staring back, reaching out to him, trying to pull him back into his grasp. Obviously, the mirror symbolises Sam’s struggle with his inner darkness. Sam is trapped and will only escape the despair, if he resists the darkness within and accepts forgiveness from others as well as from himself.

Also, I wanted to use Black Lab’s 'This Night' for a Sam wallpaper forever, because it’s the perfect Sam song, so I was happy I was able to utilise it here. I’m not quite sure if the shadow Sam throws on the ground and the reflection of the prison cell in the mirror are completely correct in regard to angle and perspective, but it was the best I could do. *g*

Just... WOW!

Aww thank you, hon! *hugs* Glad you like it. I am very happy with the concept myself. :)

I miss your art though. You seem to be more involved in writing lately. *g*

How many times do I have to tell you not to feel bad if your muse isn't playing ball? :P

This one came together pretty quickly in the end, then - nice job. The manip is amazing. :) I like how you've still got the negative space, but mixed it up a little from your usual style. The framing of the piece is so organic and fluid, it just fits together beautifully.

I try to, can't help the bad conscience though. *g*

Thanks! :) Yeah, once I had a clear concept and found the right images for the manips, it went pretty fast. And yes, I used the whole canvas this time, rather than only a potion of it. I'll probably never work without negative space, I just love it too much and it just works really well on a black desktop and that's after all what these things are designed for.

Another really incredible piece! Such emotion and torment and I love the light beams coming in on him and the depth. It all looks so real and I would never have known it wasn't an actual scene since I'm not watching the show. Bravo once again hon! :) I really love this.

Aww, thanks! :) I love stocks that create spatial depth in wallpapers and I try to use them whenever possible. If it works with the story of a wall, the better even. Manipping a scene together like this is really fun, but it needs a clear concept. :) And I am always most thankful to know that an idea transports well to someone who has no idea about the show/character.

You're very welcome. :)

I do know about the show/character, just have not watch it this season. Got tired of the demons and angels thing. I would not recognize it if it were from this season I guess I should say. ;) I miss the early days of just good old folk lore and lighter funny stuff.

Ah, yeah, okay. I wasn't sure how much of the show you've seen. I hear ya. I am so, so tired of the whole demon/angel arc as well, and most of S5 has been a trainwreck. I miss the good old days where it was just the brothers on the road, avoiding the Feds, hunting urban legends and bickering like an old married couple along the way.

Exactly! Those were the best episodes! :)

Amazing - loving the shadows and light. Also, take your time! Inspiration comes and goes; besides, the build-up is wonderful!

Thank you! :) Glad you like the piece.

I'm really having a bad conscience, but on the other hand I don't just want to slap something together half-heartedly. Thanks for your patience. :)

Oh WOW!
It's AMAZING!
I love the colors, really dark and self beating!
And light coming in through the window just perfect allegory. As for Sam isn't able to forgive himself - totally agree. I wish at the end of the season he will find his peace...
Oh, I love Sam sooo much right now! Thank you! Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!:))))

Aww, I am very glad you like it. :) Your request was my favourite one, and I was happy that I finally found a concept that did do the theme some justice. I love Sam fiercely and I think the writers fail his story considerably this season, so this wallpaper tries to make up a bit for that. I really hope Sam and Dean both find some peace at the end of this season and manage to heal somewhat over the course of S6. :)

Pain and addiction. Intense :)

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2010-03-22 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Intense was the tone I was going for, glad it worked. :)

Wow, this is a really interesting piece! I love how you represent things, how everything is so symbolic! :) Nicely done....and now I want to look up that song!

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2010-03-29 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :) Symbolism is my one weakness in art. I always try to pack as much of it into pieces as possible. Conceptual pieces like this are perfect for that. *g*

I love that song. There's this line 'take this night and wrap it around me like a sheet' and I adore that line. If I ever find a good way to visualise it I'll make a wallscroll for Sam in S4 following the lyrics of that song. :)
