Make A Request: Part VI

Folks, I am so sorry the fulfilment of the art requests is going so slow, but I had a serious art block these last couple of weeks. I feel incredibly guilty that you all have to wait so long for your wallpapers. But hey, at least the unfinished requests force me to open Photoshop and try to get something done, instead of just wallowing in self-pity. Anyway, two days back I finally had a good, and most importantly a viable, idea for naisica’s request, so here it is. Enjoy!
Mea Culpa: Dear naisica, you asked for a Sam wallpaper focussing on his demons and his guilt, but also his hope for redemption, and I was very happy about this request. Actually I was inclined to make a wallpaper about that theme anyway, but your request forced me to come up with a concept sooner rather than later and prevented that I put it off or weasel my way out of it. I can be lazy that way. ;) In my mind this wallpaper is set in early S5, depicting the desperate, guilt-ridden Sam we see in Sympathy For The Devil.
As for the art: We see a despairing Sam cower in a prison cell of his own making, it’s a prison made of shame, guilt and self-loathing. Sam turns his back to the light (forgiveness) coming in through the window, unable to accept a higher forgiveness for his sins. The door to his prison is open, Sam could walk out any time and leave the guilt behind, but he doesn’t, as he isn’t able to forgive himself either. He is situated in front of a mirror, but instead of his remorseful self all he can see is his dark alter ego staring back, reaching out to him, trying to pull him back into his grasp. Obviously, the mirror symbolises Sam’s struggle with his inner darkness. Sam is trapped and will only escape the despair, if he resists the darkness within and accepts forgiveness from others as well as from himself.
Also, I wanted to use Black Lab’s 'This Night' for a Sam wallpaper forever, because it’s the perfect Sam song, so I was happy I was able to utilise it here. I’m not quite sure if the shadow Sam throws on the ground and the reflection of the prison cell in the mirror are completely correct in regard to angle and perspective, but it was the best I could do. *g*
