Well, Sam's powers have been the build-up for the mytharc ever since S1, so it's natural that they would come into focus sooner or later. Ruby certainly has a specific goal, there's something in it for her when Lilith dies, we just have no idea what that is, only that she uses Sam to get it. She said it herself in NRFTW that Sam is a weapon and that she wants to use that weapon. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. :)
I am so happy that Sam and Dean seem to grow closer again, maybe even closer than ever. I can't really see those two separated emotionally and/or spatially for a longer period of time. LOL
