Review for 3x13 'Ghostfacers'

Two months of forced hiatus, but finally the break is over! As one would expect after heavy episodes like Jus In Bello and Mystery Spot, Ghostfacers took a more light-hearted stance, the show loves to counter the tragic with the funny. Another episode where Ben Edlund got the chance to play with his knack for the bizarre and ludicrous!

As soon as I heard that Harry and Ed will be back for this week’s episode, I was looking forward to it. I loved the geeky ghost-hunter duo from Hell House and I was always hoping they would be back one day! Thank you, Show! Hell House is my favourite comedy classic of Supernatural and therefore I had high expectations for this episode. I was pretty sure that they can’t screw up with this premise of a ghost-hunter reality tv show, especially after I saw the CW mock website for Ghostfacers, which already had me laughing so hard, that I further anticipated the episode. And it was funny, but what I didn’t expect, it was also seriously creepy! It definitely had some of the scariest Supernatural moments ever for me!

Granted, I have a soft spot for this kind of semi-documentary style, complete with shaky hand cameras, murky lighting and breathless voices from the off. I think it’s especially effective for the horror genre, because it creates a claustrophobic and creepy atmosphere through cinematography alone, basically it shows nothing and still gives the viewer the illusion to be right in the middle of events. Inevitably Blair Witch Project comes to mind as a reference here, which is one of my scariest horror movie experiences to date and Ghostfacers obviously took the same line, so I was kind of bound to love the episode.

I also adore outsider point of views on the boys, we don’t get that very often in the show for obvious reasons, so this was another factor that put the episode very high in my affection. An outsider’s point of view, apart from giving a different angle on the characters, is also the perfect vehicle to distance the episode from the ongoing plotlines, without betraying the viewers investment or reducing the character depth, justifying a more light-hearted approach. Hey, what can I say, I am still bitter about Hollywood Babylon! *g*

Ed: "And two lone wolves need … other wolves!"

I love how cleverly the concept of a ghost-hunter reality tv show is played here, as it provides a stark contrast between the harsh and bitter reality of the Winchesters' world as we know it and the artificially dramatized world of the Ghostfacers. Ed & Harry and their team obviously take their business very seriously, you know, in a geeky sort of way, but their utter lack of real understanding what they are dealing with and the dangers they expose themselves to, in combination with their self-important attitude reduces them to (loveable) caricatures for the viewer. When those two worlds suddenly collide though and the Ghostfacers need to face a real tragedy, born out of their own ignorance, they become three-dimensional characters. Corbett’s death shocks the group into a genuine reaction of fear, guilt and grief, and I am glad the episode allowed the characters to grow beyond their humorous surface here. Ed’s attempt to get Corbett out of his death loop gave his character an unexpected level of sincerity and compassion and Maggy’s and Harry’s grief was heartfelt.

Anyway, after the Ghostfacers manage to escape the immediate danger and return to the light of day, they deal just like most other people who faced the unimaginable, by repressing the more gruesome and disturbing aspects of their experience and re-telling the story in a form that makes it bearable for them. Sam just phrases it best, the video honours Corbett’s memory while it at the same time grossly exploits the manner of his death, it’s a testament to both, the ridiculous and the sympathetic in these characters. The little pre-hunt interview with Corbett that was attached at the end of the video, predictable and clichéd as it was, was actually pretty moving and in the end it makes me sad that Sam and Dean had to destroy the evidence, because the family and friends of Corbett will never have the chance to see it now.

As a sidenote: Interestingly enough it is the most 'invisible' character of the group, Spruce, who doesn’t react emotionally to the situation at all and keeps his distance, always observing, asking questions from the off. He reacts differently to Sam and Dean’s presence than the others, on a more professional, analytic level. While the others panic and are pretty much absorbed by the whole situation, he processes the little snippets he overhears here and there and approaches Dean in a moment of quiet with pretty intimate questions. I perceived that as obtrusive from his side and his lack of reaction to the general situation a tad disturbing.

Sam: "Well, it's 12:04, Dean. You good? You happy? 'Let's go hunt the Morton house,' you said. 'It's our Grand Canyon.'"
Dean: "Sam, I don't want to hear it."
Sam: "You've got two months left, Dean. But instead, we're going to die tonight."

Naturally there is no in depth character work going on in this episode, but as viewers we know the Winchesters so well, that a total sum of 3-5 lines over the course of 40 minutes gives us an exact picture of their frame of mind here. Dean’s time is nearly up, no solution to the deal in sight and Sam is freaking out, obviously having other concerns on his mind than hunting, but indulging his brother’s need for some (questionable) fun nonetheless! ♥

The little reference to Croatoan, where Dean stated that he wants to take some time out with Sam, visiting the Grand Canyon, which he never had the chance to see despite all their travels throughout the country, was a beautiful touch. The Grand Canyon is the American natural wonder, a national symbol if you so will, and I love how in the world of the Winchesters its equivalent is the most haunted house in America. Dean surely has his very own brand of tourist attraction, and it’s so telling that he wants to use the time he has left at least partly to fulfil some of his dreams, just in case. He knows Sam will try his best, and I am sure he trusts his brother’s efforts, but if Ruby is right and there is no way to save him, he has at least satisfied some of his curiosity and made the world a little bit safer in the process.

Dean’s initial reaction to Spruce’s questions about Sam's statement, that Dean only has two more months to live - which he overheard earlier - was noteworthy, as he starts to explain their situation and then stopps himself. It’s not unusual for Dean to share his feelings with strangers rather than with those close to him, because it's easier to keep his emotional distance and it's way less compromising, we’ve seen that on several occasions. I think what’s stopping Dean here is the realisation that Spruce uses the moment as part of his recording. It simply comes off as sensationalism and not as genuine concern about Dean’s situation, just like Spruce secretly filmed Harry’s and Maggy’s kiss, no concern for their privacy either. Additionally, there’s really no way to tell someone outside of their line of profession 'My brother died and I sold my soul for him and by the way I am going to hell in two months”' without coming off as completely nuts. As Dean so eloquently states at the end: "The truth only gets you a straight jacket or a punch in the face. Sometimes both!"

It’s of course also a dig against reality shows, where people expose their most private lives, losing any sense of dignity and self-censoring in the process. In the end the whole episode can be seen as a meta comment on reality tv and bit of fun poking at their own show. Ben Edlund surely likes to play with this kind of meta story-telling.

Ed: "We were here first, we’ve already set up base camp. We beat you!"

I love that when the boys arrive at the scene they pose as police officers, self-confidently asking for Corbett’s identity, although they don’t even wear uniforms, simply trusting their natural authority to work. It was realistic that Dean didn’t recognise Ed at once, after all they met two years ago, and Sam and Dean work a lot of cases. I thought it was funny that, once they figured out who Ed is, Sam rattles off the specifics of the Hell House case, such a stickler for details our Sammy! Also, Dean’s immediate and rather physical reaction to Ed staking their claim was just delightful. ♥

I love how Sam and Dean struggle to maintain some kind of order and discipline with the huge group of amateurs they suddenly have under their wing, making their job so much harder. Their exasperated reaction to the group running around in panic like headless chicken or their annoyance at the continuously running cameras was priceless. While Sam and Dean work very calmly after Corbett’s abduction, the situation changes drastically for Dean, when Sam vanishes. By the way, that was a brilliantly edited scene, the flickering lights showing Sam clearly standing in the middle of the room and with the next flicker he is just gone. Spooky!

Anyway, Dean instantly focuses on retrieving Sam, not really caring any longer if the group follows his lead or not. He actually has a moment of panic and runs through the house, desperately calling out for Sam, although it’s obvious that it is not likely to show any results, after all, there was no reaction from Corbett either. But then Dean gets his head together and, despite the enormous pressure, manages to work out the solution quickly, competently connecting the different information they gathered earlier and rescuing Sam just in time. Hmm, smart and protective big brother Dean is my favourite kind of Dean! ♥

I have to mention here that the scene where Sam and Corbett are held captive by the creepy ghost, seriously freaked me out, and Supernatural rarely scares me. The cinematographic format worked its full effect in this scene, with the tinny music in the background, the dim lights, the shaky camera and blurry filters, which only allowed for poor vision and highlighted the sounds instead. The close-up of Corbett’s death agonies built a stark contrast to those effects, giving it full impact. Nicely done, Show!

It’s great that although Sam and Dean do the brunt of the case work here, the Ghostfacers in the end don’t prove to be utterly useless, but have their part in vanquishing the spirit, by freeing Corbett out of his death loop and convincing him to go after his murderer. Corbett and Daggett’s spirits cancelling each other out was very reminiscent of Red Sky at Morning, nifty. By the way, it’s also nice that after three seasons of Supernatural they still find new variations of their standard haunting/spirits. The 'death echoes' were new and hence made a good tool for exposition without boring long-time viewers to death and still gave new viewers a comprehensible introduction.

What else was noteworthy:

(1) I guess this episode was easy on the budget because the ROCK was back! The use of Focus' 'Hocus Pocus' made me really giddy! I didn’t have that for a while with the music in Supernatural. ♥

(2) I loved that there were so many little things in the background that had absolutely no meaning for the Ghostfacers, but were telling for the viewer: the Impala's unmistakable rumble that announces the boys before we see them, the silent looks Sam and Dean throw each other, communicating, the constant flickering of Spruce’s camera, who is clueless about the tell-tale sign of a spirit close by. It’s fun for the viewer to be one-step ahead of the protagonists, and I love when the show adds these kind of layers for the audience.

In conclusion: Ghostfacers was a highly entertaining episode, wonderfully executed and with some really nifty writing and the return of some well beloved characters from S1. I, for one, am glad for this short reprieve before we delve into the abyss of angst that undoubtedly will be the last three episodes for this season. Roll on finale! *g*

Did you know? Ed's quip about Dean's 'chisel-chest' wasn't in the script, but improvised by A.J. When he delivered the line Jared had a laughing fit and walked off set, repeating the line to himself, unable to calm down for a while. *g*

Some people didn't like this episode because there was a lack of the boys; but I absolutely loved it. I mean, how often do we get an outsider POV? Not that many, but sometimes you need a break from the angst, considering if you've seen the episodes non-stop, without the hiatus/writer's strike, it would be a bit overwhelming in my opinion.

I literally screamed, 'THAT'S THE IMPALA', the second I heard it. My mother looks at me, with this curious look. Heh. ^^;;

But I loved it, and am glad you liked it, too. ^^

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know! I was astonished how many people seemed to dislike the episode, since usually I am the one who doesn't like the humorous one's. *g* Maybe it's also that I knew what the episode was about, so I didn't expect it to be a Sam'n'Dean focused one. *shrugs*

And it's not as if the boys are not in it! There's so much going on between them, it's just all not in the foreground.

Anyway I loved it and thought it was really funny! ♥

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*sighs*

I have nothing more to add. We already talked it through in great depth! Plus, I agree with everything you wrote, obviously.

as viewers we know the Winchesters so well, that a total sum of 3-5 lines over the course of 40 minutes give us an exact picture of their frame of mind here.
I think that's what I love most about this episode, and why it works. That one tiny exchange gives us everything we need to know to tie the brothers into their ongoing continuity, and having that allows the rest of the episode to be devoid of any such seasonal arc issues without suffering the kind of jarring break with continuity that Hollywood Babylon suffers from.

Awesome job, Show!

...okay, so I did find something else to say after all.

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, exactly! I never really had the feeling that the boys came off as flat or out of line. It's funny to see the episode and watch the boys do their thing. There's a lot hilarious and interesting facial expressions from both boys throughout the episode, if you only pay attention to them.

I think though I am the only one who thought Spruce was kinda creepy. His nosiness, his lack for personal privacy and the way he constantly threw in questions from the off, repeatedly even if the boys didn't answer at once made him bit unsavory to me. *lol*

[identity profile] llywela13.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think though I am the only one who thought Spruce was kinda creepy.
He didn't make much impression on me at all until I started writing up my review and realised how observant/nosy he was. Someone on my flist thought he was very much internalising his role as a creator of reality TV, making the most of every opportunity that could be exploited, from covertly filming Harry and Maggie's makeout session to pumping Dean for information about the overheard 'two months left' conversation. Unsavory in the way you expect from a reality TV show!

I adore the brothers in this episode, and did from the moment the Impala appeared. They might not be in the lead role here, but they are so very themselves, in every way. Just themselves stripped of the usual intense level of insight the normal format provides, which is what makes this one so refreshing and interesting.

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah exactly! It's kind of funny though because when you see Spruce in that car on the golf lawn in the beginning he doesn't seem to be one to just concentrate on the important, flabbering on about his family history. He seemed like someone who is lost in his own little world. A Shamanologist, doesn't say that all? *g* A weirdo, I didn't expect him to be so bloodhound focused. LOL

Absolutely! Our view on the boys isn't obstructed by the plot in this, because it's not about them. It's the advantage of an outsider's perspective. :)

[identity profile] joans23.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew I was either going to love this episode, or hate it. Lucky for me I loved it! You are right, it was one of the scariest! Killing Corbett just freaked me out! I think the scenes between the brothers were so special because they were so fleeting and not really the focus of the episode. Overall, much love and I think I'm going to re-watch it right now! We are in for such an angsty ride for the last few episodes, we should enjoy the hell out of this one while we can :) Great review as always!!

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! The last 3 episodes will kill us with angst, I am pretty sure, so I am happy we got a short reprieve with this episode.

I know what you mean, I watched the episodes 3 times in a row LOL. There was enough of the boys to keep me in the 'Winchester' mood. And freaked out Dean calling for 'SAMMY' is pretty much a win in my book any day! *g*

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Great review! I agree it was a great episode. I was dissopointed that there wasn't more Sam and Dean time, but I agree with what you said, in just those few lines it gave the fans that know Sam and Dean so well enough that we really didn't need anymore in this episode, because this episode wasn't about them really. I enjoyed the Ghostfacers, and it was a delight to have Ed and Harry back, Hell House is one of my favorite episodes. While Supernatural is such a spooky show.. its the emotions of Sam and Dean, and the humor that I think make it such a great show, and this episode proved why Supernatural is one of the best shows in its gene out there. They have just great story-telling, it was very entertaining. And while it was a great break from the very high emotion past few episodes, and it's understandable that it was needed after such a long break from the show...but I can not wait for next weeks episode!

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, Deavon! ;) I am looking forward to the last 3 episodes as well. The relationship between Sam and Dean is the heart of the show and I am utterly enamored with it; there's nothing in the show that I love more. ♥

I love the angst and the intense emotions in the show, but every now and then I need room to breathe and since the plotlines with the boys don't really provide that space (after all they can't just say: 'Hey let's forget about the deal for 3 episodes and just let them be happy) this episode was actually very cleverly done, because with an outsider PoV you can just avoid that problem.

I am really curious now what Kripke&Co have in store for us. The next three weeks will be one hell of a ride! *g*

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh these past two months have been TORTURE without new new episodes! This season has been a ride so far, I'm dying to know the results of Dean's deal. I'm so scared! I don't know how Kripke&Co are gonna pull it off, but their finales are always a big bang, I hope this one doesn't dissopoint. I doubt it will, it's Kripke we're talking about. LOL.

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
I am sure Kripke will break our hearts in tiny little pieces and smile about it! *g* I'm expecting a cliffhanger a la S1 if not worse. Going into yet another 3 months hiatus in 3 weeks kills me already! /sigh

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I know. I expect a big cliffhanger since they got an early pick up this year. It does suck that after two months we only get four episodes and then three more months! GAH! But I have the two novels that came out to read..and after two days I don't know what I'll do for the rest of the three months, there's always Supernatural fanart to tie us over!

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we lived through the summer hiatus before, we can do it again! :) Fanart, reading fanfiction, writing about and discussing the show and of course rewatching the it will pull us through! S3 felt so disrupted with all those long hiatuses, I am looking forward to just watch it a couple of times in one go!

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, us Supernatural fans always find a way to survive the summer I guess. I look foward to watching the season again as well, but unlucky for me the newwork that airs it here isn't the best, so my recordings of the season aren't that great. But I've already seen the cover art for the season 3 boxset, and if I remember right I think it said it would be out in August this year!

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we just have to survive it LOL Sam and Dean need us back in fall! I am sorry to hear your recordings are so bad. :( I would totally freak if I'd loose my SN episodes LOL. A nightmare! Yeah, the DVDs will come out some time during the hiatus, but since I live in Europe the US release of the DVD set isn't as important to me as the european one, which will probably a bit later! ;)

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sorry to hear yours come out later. But they are always worth the wait. The gag reel is always my favorite. Jared and Jensen just crack me up! I just got threw watching season 2 to get me threw the past two months. I forgot how sad the finale was! It still makes me cry. LOL.

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, the S2 finale kills me every time and I have seen it at least a dozen times. ♥

The JJs are fab! I love those two to death and I am happy that we have so genuinely friendly and talented actors on our show! I really hope the S3 gag reel has some bloopers on the synchronised talking scene from Mystery Spot on it! *lol*

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I know it! I love JJ to pieces, on and off the screen. They're awesome! The first time I saw that episode and that scene...and after I stopped laughing I was like.. "Hmm I wonder how many times they had to do that? GAG REEL! *SQUEE*"

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, lol, well Jared stated that they nailed the scene pretty fast, but I still hope there will be some of it on the gag reel! :D

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Awe, Jared is such a party pooper! But that doesn't surprise, JJ are so close to each other after three seasons. I bet they practiced like that scene with having to close the doors at the same time that was in the season one gag reel. That was so funny! I love it when Jensen calls out "Silence!" it's so cute. XD

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
ROFL well, Jared said, he told Jensen on their morning drive to the set to read the lines to him a dozen times or so, so he knew how Jensen would pronounce it, then started to silently imitate him. On set they nailed it pretty fast then, only with Jensen screwing Jareds lines up by sometimes forgetting a word. *g*

They are such dorks! *loves them*

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Awe!!! I love themmm!!! They're so adorkable! Man, what I wouldn't give to spend just a day on the set just to watch them in the act. I don't know if it's more fun to watch JJ in action or watch them in the show! Lol.

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I'd say it's just about the same fun, only with the JJs it's more about the laughing and with Sam&Dean it's more about the crying. *lol* Everybody who ever worked on the set gushes about them being the most friendly people they ever worked with. ♥

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I know! I've read a lot of interviews in the mags from guest stars, and they always ask what it's like to work with Jared and Jensen and they all say how fun they are. It just makes me want to go visit the set even more! Darn my fear of flights! But Dean is right, planes crash. XD Haha. If I even did go, I'd want to go a day that Kim was directing, they seem to be close to him and I'm sure they all three have a lot of laughs together.

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they have a special bond with Kim. ♥ Well, I'm never going to see them, so thank god there's DVD extras and convention fanvids! *lol*
Edited 2008-04-28 21:43 (UTC)

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. I usually watch the DVD extras before I even watch the episodes when I get them! Lol. And the convention vids are great, I try not to watch them though, cause I get so jealous. One of my friends actually got to go to one and meet Jensen and Jared! I was so jealous of him. I hope to make it to a convention one day, if it ever gets close enough, cause I know I'll never make it over to the set.

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, since there will never be a convention anywhere near me, I guess I just have get by on 2nd hand reports! :)

'kay, I am off. Bedtime for me! Bye! *waves*

[identity profile] tuesdaymelodies.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Awe, well I promise if the 1% chance I ever get to go comes threw I'll write a very detailed report just for you! Lol.
Goodnight. Lol. Byes. *waves back*

*huggles*

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)

Vielen Dank, Du bist total nett. ;o)

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)

Postest Du eigentlich nie in Comms?

[identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)

*gg*

Ich versteh was Du meinst.

*seufz*

Aber hey, was wäre das Leben ohne Herausforderungen. *gg*

Hee, I loved how you totally could recognize the Impala approaching without even seeing it, it has such a distinct purr, and then of course the rock music to boot! ;) (Although they did have a great old rock song at least in 3x04 as well, "Run in the Jungle," they seem to like their Credence Clearwater!)

I liked this episode overall, I too enjoyed seeing Dean and Sammy from an outside perspective (it kind of reminded me of the beginning of "Roadkill"), and their reactions to the "Ghostfacers" were so funny....although it was sweet as always to see Dean's reaction to Sammy missing, his "Sammy!" yelling....big!protective!brother!Dean is always touching...

Luckily I was not as creeped out as you by the episode, I think for instance Hell House was even creepier, and definitely Asylum....maybe it's just the way it's filmed, you can't see as much, plus the comedic way it was presented at all times...

Protective big brother Dean is my absolute favourite version of Dean. :) Enjoy it as long as you can. :(

I don't find Hell House creepy at all. LOL Asylum is creepy, I'll give you that. With Ghostfacers it's the cinematography that creeps me out, I find not seeing something way creepier than a digitally manipulated ghost effect. It's not throughout the episode though, that scene between Sam, Corbett and the ghost was the worst, it had me on the edge of my seat. LOL

Hoping to have my say
