as viewers we know the Winchesters so well, that a total sum of 3-5 lines over the course of 40 minutes give us an exact picture of their frame of mind here. I think that's what I love most about this episode, and why it works. That one tiny exchange gives us everything we need to know to tie the brothers into their ongoing continuity, and having that allows the rest of the episode to be devoid of any such seasonal arc issues without suffering the kind of jarring break with continuity that Hollywood Babylon suffers from.
