Well, but if Dean does not see almost causing the apocalypse because he could not let his brother go as a mistake, then he will never see whatever damage Ezekiel may inflict on the world because he could not let Sam go as a mistake either. ;) In both scenarions the fact that Sam lives to see another day will always win out over Dean's guilty conscience then.

That's true. Although for me at least I've always seen Dean as more inclined to blame his actions under Alastair's tutelage for the apocalypse than for the deal he made to save Sam's life. Dean has always been rather tough on himself and if he were to blame himself it would be for breaking under the torture and causing the first seal to be broken. At least that's my take on things since to my recollection we've heard Dean speak of his guilt for breaking the first seal in hell, but nothing about the deal that got him to hell in the first place.

On the other hand when it comes to this deal with Ezekiel there is no way for Dean to not link the consequences of the deal going pear shaped with his choice to save Sam's life. After all any damage that Ezekiel wroughts will most likely be undertaken using Sam's body, which Zeke would not have had without Dean's help :(. The most tragic thing for me is the fact that if the deal goes pear shaped and Ezekiel causes harm to others especially Dean, but also to innocents. Dean will have helped make Sam's worst nightmare come true :(
