I am not happy about the sex, but I don't think it was intended zo make me happy, it was Sammy self-destructing. That's what grief does, it drives people into doing things they'd never do if they were in a clear frame of mind. So no, it didn't destroy the character at all.
I hate the division in fandom over Sam and Dean. Hate. It. They are both part of the story and both equally important. They are both equally lovable and equally flawed. Dean did a lot of questionable things in the show as well, but that's being human for you. They slip, they screw up, they make bad decisions, they hurt each other. I am sad if people can't accept that. :(
