Hello, flist! I know it has been quiet around here lately, but I wasn’t really in a talkative mood these last couple of weeks. I mostly buried myself in computer games and books and discovered new (to me) TV shows. Taking a time-out from fandom every now and then is necessary for my mental health, I think. Anyway, here is a short status update – personal and fandom wise – for anyone who is interested.

(1) I was bored the other day and spontaneously decided to get a Tumblr account, and I have been wasting my time away on that site ever since. So many pretty, pretty (and poignant) gif sets! ♥ Browsing Sam-and-Dean related art/gifs on Tumblr actually managed to get me past the deep seated resentment I felt towards the show ever since S8 finished. I am in a good and peaceful place with SPN at the moment, mostly by repressing the majority of the past season, but I fear that the upcoming spoilers from ComicCon will catapult me right back into misery. Not to mention S9 itself. I am really considering avoiding ComicCon and postponing watching S9, depending on the reactions I see on my flist. I am really undecided at the moment.

(2) I have five unfinished S8 episode reviews on my desktop and they stare at me mockingly every time I boot the computer. The review for Pac-Man Fever comes closest to being completed, but my mind goes blank every time I open it – or any of them, really. S8 really did a number on my writing motivation and emotional investment. I am happy S9 will only start to air mid-October, giving me more time to maybe finish those reviews before the new season begins, if only to have S8 complete. It would satisfy my OCD tendencies; I really hate leaving things open ended.

(3) You know, this morning I read on my flist that Supernatural won a row of GMMR (Give Me My Remote) awards, but after the initial 'go, show' reaction on my part, reading through the actual awards really bummed me out. It leaves the reader with the impression that Jared/Sam has not been present in S8 at all. No recognition for Sam’s storyline or Jared’s impressive acting, particularly in the last quarter of the season and the finale. It makes me incredibly sad on Jared’s behalf that he is almost always underrepresented in these kinds of awards. The fact that the Dean/Castiel moment from Goodbye Stranger won 'Most Rewatchable Moment' and 'Biggest Tearjerker' really makes me wonder if I and the rest of fandom are watching the same show. Given the abundance of emotional brotherly moments in second half of S8, this outcome is simply incomprehensible for me. And I am just going to ignore the 'Best Couple' award for Dean/Castiel. Sure, it shows that probably a lot of D/C fans were voting in that poll, still the whole thing leaves me in low spirits.

(4) For all of you who took an interest in my health related issues the other week: All tests came back negative. Apart from the elevated blood pressure, I seem to be perfectly healthy. My new medication works just fine and the tiredness is a thing of the past – well, except for heat related tiredness and insomnia, of course.

So, what's new with my flist? Are you enjoying the hiatus so far or are you desperate for the show to come back?

I tried to ignore those GMMR awards. When I saw that the line Dean says about needing him won some award for best line (was that the best moment) I nearly threw the computer out the window. It's a joke. It makes me wonder who's voting (mostly because that was FAR from one of the best moments, let alone the best line).

And Jared misses out all the time for some strange reason. Much has to do with him just not being a fan favorite (or not being as popular as Jensen and now Misha is seems). I desperately try not to let it get me down. I don't feel sorry for Jared as such because he's made a successful career for himself and he's come such a long way over the years. Hopefully that will be reward enough.

My only real concern is that TPTB will think that all we want to see is Dean and Cas moments and focus on that in S9. I sincerely (like WHOA!) hope not because that will sadly be the end for me. I don't mind some but surely they will actually focus on an actual story line rather than pandering to what they think the fans will want. (though...*sigh*... after seeing some of S8 I'm not so sure). I'm going to remain hopeful. Hopefully those "awards" are mostly ignored by TPTB.

Sorry for the rant. I saw that earlier today and it made me feel sad (and angry just a bit).

I am actually desperate for the show to come back - I do miss the boys and just being able to watch an episode. I was encouraged by the final episode.

I'm glad your tests came back negative. Hopefully you'll be able to get a good night's sleep soon. <33

I try to ignore polls like that as well, but it was the first thing I saw on my flist yesterday morning and somehow I let it get to me. /sigh I get that a lot of D/C fans were voting in that poll, but I wonder what happened to all the brother fans out there? We used to be the majority of fandom and vocal, too, in polls and in general. Maybe S8 drove them all away. :(

And Jared misses out all the time for some strange reason. Much has to do with him just not being a fan favorite (or not being as popular as Jensen and now Misha is seems)
I don't really get that. Jared is a ball of sunshine, down-to-earth, friendly, generous and always so positive. How can he NOT be a fan favourite? I hope that he isn't affected by the lack of online recognition. It's just that I agree with [livejournal.com profile] de_nugis that Jared has delivered some of his best work in the 2nd half of S8, while Jensen has delivered some of his weakest, and I wished that people would acknowledge that more.

My only real concern is that TPTB will think that all we want to see is Dean and Cas moments and focus on that in S9.
Sometimes I am concerned about that as well, but then I think that they will probably do what they have done in S8, namely cater to both fan groups, often at the expense of character integrity and narrative flow. Why alienate either faction, if you can string them both along?

I am actually desperate for the show to come back - I do miss the boys and just being able to watch an episode. I was encouraged by the final episode.
I wished I was encouraged by the final episode as well. It mostly left me discontent, though, and fallen angels and human Cas are not something that makes me enthusiastic about S9. I am sick and tired of angels. And I don't trust them with Sam and Dean anymore. So I am just really torn about S9. /sigh

I'm glad your tests came back negative. Hopefully you'll be able to get a good night's sleep soon.
Thank you! :)

The fact that the Dean/Castiel moment from Goodbye Stranger won 'Most Rewatchable Moment' and 'Biggest Tearjerker'

Wow :/ But yeah I'm not surprised at Dean/Castiel winning best couple, from everything I see on tumblr and even youtube it seems that fans of that pairing are by far the fandom majority these days? And I've no objections to that pairing particularly, but I do think it's a shame that fandom seems to be less focused on the core of the show being the brotherly bond and scenes.

Yeah, I wonder what happend to the fans of the brotherly relationship. We used to be the majority of fandom and we used to be vocal, too. Nowadays not so much, though. I wonder if S8 drove them all away. Honestly, I couldn't blame them. :(

I think the last few seasons have seen a lot of the old guard among the fans slowly drift away, maybe feeling that it isn't so much the same show they originally fell in love with any more, in various ways. And the newer contingent have slid into their place, focusing on angels and 'Destiel' as if that's what the show has always been about. And so there's this schism between the old and the new and since the new is what's current...that's what gets the most attention.

It's a familiar story...

It's just too bad, because I've seen some older fans come back to fandom in S7, where the show focused more on the brothers and where, instead of creating contrived conflicts between Sam and Dean, the writers tried to explore the individual damage their life had done to the characters. Not to mention that they moved away from the angel mythology. But S8 made a 180 in every regard, and given how often I was about to quit the show in S8, I am not surprised that 'old-school' fans left the show in spades. :(

I'm glad your tests turned out all right. And – yeah, I thoroughly sympathise about the insomnia. Hot weather and sleep just do not go together, alas.

I'd heard Supernatural won some awards, but I didn't check what they won until I saw your post a minute ago. I think I disagree with pretty much all of those. The Nazi necromancers and the RPers were both more fun than the cartoon and – bloody hell, last I saw Dean was completely coherent and Sam was not, so ... And the Goodbye Stranger thing just frustrates me, because I still think the scene might actually have worked if it had been between Castiel and Meg. But I guess that's just me. :)

I'm not sure how I feel about the show at the moment. The finale was less awful than it might have been, but I still really only find it watchable if I hit fastforward every time Metatron opens his mouth. They could do something interesting with the scenario they set up, but I don't know if they will, and since Ben Edlund is gone I'm less confident than I'd like to be. I guess I'll just see how it goes.

Thanks! :) I've been suffering from insomnia all my life. One should think I'm used to it by now, but no, it still bothers me.

I think I disagree with pretty much all of those.
Yeah, I disagree with almost everything on that list as well. Everybody Hates Hitler was, hands down, the best episode of the season in terms of creativity and what it did for the character arcs as well as the mythology. And I guess we could argue about who needs therapy more, Dean or Sam. Sam may not have been that coherent at the end, but he seems way more self-aware than Dean to me at the moment.

They could do something interesting with the scenario they set up, but I don't know if they will
Yeah, I doubt that, too. I mean, the S7 finale presented the writers with amazing narrative opportunities, for the characters as well as the mytharc, and they didn't take any of them. Instead they seemed intent to make the worst of it. So, really, I have little hope they will use the S8 finale any different.

I don't think anyone takes those polls very seriously, especially the ones that are pretty explicitly shippy, as that one seems to be. It would be nice to see Jared's work acknowledged, especially since, honestly, I thought the second half of s8 had some of his strongest performances and some of Jensen's weakest -- part of my problem with the later parts of the season was that Jensen really wasn't selling some of the vital Dean stuff with Sam and Cas to me (I found his performances and the character much more convincing in some of the scenes with Charlie and Benny, even though I find Benny as an individual tropey in the most boring way), but I don't think that winning E polls would be the relevant endorsement.

I don't know where I am with s9, especially since I am mostly depressed and bleak rather than in a happy brotherly place with where the finale left Sam and Dean. And the writing team they have to work with is extremely weak.

I'm glad things are OK for you medically, though. That's an important good thing.

I know I shouldn't take a poll like that seriously, it just happend to be the first thing I saw yesterday morning and it really put me in a crabby mood. I shouldn't look at stuff like that before I had my coffee, obviously. And I very much agree with you. While I think that, generally, Jensen is the strongest actor on Supernatural, he was not on top of his game in the 2nd half of the season. Sometimes he seemed to go through the motions. Jared, on the other hand, had some of his best performances. I think he got the better material, too. I just wished the fans would acknowledge and value Jared's acting more.

I hear you. The S8 finale didn't exactly leave me in a warm and fuzzy brotherly place either. Even though I was touched by the final scene between the brothers, I felt that Carver somewhat missed the point with that scene. So, I really have no trust at all that S9 will take characters somewhere interesting. However, browsing through Sam-and-Dean stuff on Tumblr not only reminded me why I loved this show in the first place, but also that I shouldn't allow S8 to take that love away from me. If anything good came from S8 it's that now that I know how bad the show can get, I feel even more grateful for how good it was in the first 7 seasons and it makes me way more forgiving for the flaws of those seasons. You know, if S7 had not ended on such a cruel cliffhanger, I would be happy to just pretend the show had been cancelled after S7 and let it go.

And thanks. I am relieved, too, that things turned out okay. :)

I'm also worried about ComicCon spoilers, not sure if it will make me more or less excited about s9. I'm definitely interested in where they left off in the S8 finale, and I'll watch no matter what, but there are some directions they could take that would be much less appealing.
As much as I love reading your episode reviews, it sounds like they're stressing you out. Maybe combine what you've got so far, publish it and call it done? I hate leaving things unfinished too, but sometimes out of self-preservation you have to.

I don't know what to think about the poll wins, it makes me feel the same way about fans of the show (are we really watching the same show?). I think that because the dean/cas pairing is so popular the websites that run these polls mainly promote it for all the hits they'll get. That and apparently the poll software itself is easy to rig so you can vote many times.

tumblr is pretty fun, visually inspiring, not so much on the show discussion/meta angle though. I used to contribute more, now I mostly reblog. What's your tumblr name? You can follow me if you want at deansmixtape.

Glad your tests are ok and hope you get some good sleep soon.

The problem is that I don't believe/trust a word that comes out of Carver's mouth. Even if the spoilers sound good, I just don't believe that the writers are capable of following through. I mean, just look at the episode description for Taxi Driver. On paper it sounds amazing, but look what they actually made of it. :(

As much as I love reading your episode reviews, it sounds like they're stressing you out. Maybe combine what you've got so far, publish it and call it done?
Heh, sometimes they do stress me out. Particularly when the show airs and I have to meet a weekly deadline. I might actually consider a condensed review for of 8.21 - 8.23 if I don't manage single ones till S9 starts. And I will probably not write reviews for S9, unless it drastically improves over S8.

tumblr is pretty fun, visually inspiring, not so much on the show discussion/meta angle though. I used to contribute more, now I mostly reblog. What's your tumblr name?
Oh, absolutely. LJ will remain my main platform for a serious exchange about the show. But in moments like these, where I don't feel up to writing metas or fanarting myself, Tumblr gives me the opportunity to stay involved with fandom, even though I don't contribute much. I linked my Tumblr in the above post. My name is galathea-snb, just like on LJ. :) I'll take a look at yours. I am wary of wank though, this fandom has way too much of it.

Glad your tests are ok and hope you get some good sleep soon.
Thanks! :) I think I'll sleep better once this heat wave is over.

Take my advice, Chris - do not look at any spoilers whatsoever. Or stupid online awards. Your peace of mind is more important!

Tumblr is weird like that - it's a strange sort of platform, but man does it suck you in! I've found that my relationship with it has changed enormously over the year or so I've been actively using mine. It has a lot of downsides, but those can be minimised by judicious use of blacklists and the like, and it is a lot of fun when, especially when you aren't in the right headspace for more serious blogging. For me, for e.g., since I'm not currently in a place where I can write proper reviews or even decent fannish LJ entries, the throwaway nature of Tumblr suits me down to the ground. And will hopefully nudge me back toward more writerly enthusiasm...

LOL I'll try to!

I hear you about Tumblr. Even though I can't write or art myself at the moment, Tumblr allows me to feel active in my fandom nonetheless, even if it is only through mindless rebloggging of 'the pretty'. Plus, I enjoy looking at stuff from my other fandoms, fandoms I am not active in and would probably never write at LJ about, but still feel passionate about. I also really love the Tumblr Queue feature, which allows you to space out stuff from intense browsing sessions instead of flooding everyones dashboard. Neat. I will have to look at blacklist features so I can follow more blogs. At the moment I am very careful about whom I follow. I don't want to see wank on my dash or lots of stuff I don't care about.

Uh huh. It's a good way of expressing your enjoyment of shows you've always loved, or get nostalgic about, without having to become actively involved in the fandom thereof, as such. The effortlessness of that is very appealing - I find I like being a casual fan!
